Why birth time matters so much
The grahas move slowly enough that a few minutes changes nothing about their rashi placements — except the Moon, which moves about half a degree an hour. But the lagna advances through the entire zodiac every day, so a new rashi rises roughly every two hours.
An hour's error in a recorded birth time can therefore change your lagna, and with it every house placement in the chart. If the time is uncertain, the chart can still be read from the Moon rather than the lagna. That is a genuine traditional method, not a fallback, and it is what a daily rashifal uses.
Lagna — the rising sign
The lagna is the rashi that was rising on the eastern horizon at your exact moment and place of birth. It is the first house, and every other house is counted from it. Where the rashi describes the mind and the Sun sign describes the will, the lagna describes the body, the constitution and the shape a life takes.
Rashi — the Moon sign
In Indian and Nepali practice your rashi is your Chandra rashi: the sign the Moon occupied at birth. This is what people mean when they ask your rashi, and it is what every daily reading on this site is calculated from.
Nakshatra
The same circle is divided again into 27 nakshatras of 13°20′ each. Your janma nakshatra is the one the Moon occupied at birth. It locates the Moon nine times more precisely than the rashi does, and its ruling graha sets your Vimshottari dasha sequence.
Planetary positions and houses
The chart places nine grahas: the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn and the two lunar nodes, Rahu and Ketu. The nodes are mathematical points rather than bodies — they are where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic.
This calculator uses whole-sign houses, the system standard across India and Nepal: the rashi containing the lagna is the entire first house, the next rashi the second, and so on. That is why a house and a rashi are often spoken about interchangeably in a Vedic reading.
Dashas — the timing system
Vimshottari dasha divides a notional 120-year span among the nine grahas in a fixed order and fixed lengths. Which lord you begin with is set by your birth nakshatra, and how much of that first period remained is set by how far the Moon had already travelled through it.
This is what lets Vedic astrology make timed statements rather than general ones: the mahadasha sets the theme of a decade, and it is read together with the current transits.
