What is Lagna?
Lagna, or the ascendant, is the rashi rising on the eastern horizon at the moment and place of birth. It changes roughly every two hours, so it is the one part of a chart that needs an accurate birth time. The lagna sets the first house, and every other house is counted from it.

Why the birth time matters more here than anywhere else
The Moon moves through a rashi in about two and a quarter days, and the Sun takes a month. The ascendant crosses a whole rashi in roughly two hours. An hour's error will usually leave your rashi and nakshatra untouched and still change your lagna.
That is why an astrologer asks for a time to the minute and a place, not just a date. Without them the houses cannot be drawn, and without houses most of a kundali's claims have nothing to attach to.
Lagna, rashi and sun sign are three different things
Your rashi is where the Moon was. Your lagna is what was rising. A Western sun sign is where the Sun was, measured against the tropical zodiac rather than the sidereal one. All three can be different, and usually are.
When a Vedic reading names a house — Mars in the seventh, Saturn in the tenth — it is counting from the lagna unless it says otherwise.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between lagna and rashi?
Lagna is the rashi rising on the eastern horizon at your birth; rashi is the sign the Moon occupied. Lagna needs an exact birth time because it changes every two hours; the Moon's rashi usually does not change within a day.
Can I find my lagna without a birth time?
Not reliably. The ascendant moves through all twelve rashis in a day, so a birth time that is wrong by two hours will usually give the wrong lagna. A date alone can give you your rashi and nakshatra, but not your lagna.
What is a lagna lord?
The graha that rules the rising rashi. If Mesha is rising, Mangal is the lagna lord. Its placement and strength are read as a statement about the chart as a whole rather than about one area of life.
Is lagna the same as the ascendant?
Yes. Lagna is the Sanskrit term and ascendant the English one for the same point: the degree of the zodiac on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth.
