What is Kundali Matching?
Kundali Matching compares two birth charts for compatibility. The usual method, Ashtakoota Gun Milan, scores eight factors out of 36 points in total. A score of 18 or above is conventionally treated as acceptable — but which koota lost the points matters more than the total, because Nadi and Bhakoot are weighted heavily and are treated as blocking on their own.

How many gun are there?
Thirty-six. They are not distributed evenly: the eight kootas are worth 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 points respectively, rising roughly in the order the tradition treats them as serious. Nadi alone is worth 8 — almost a quarter of the total.
The eight kootas
Varna (1 point) compares social temperament, derived from the two moon rashis. Vashya (2) compares which sign naturally influences the other. Tara (3) counts the distance between the two birth nakshatras in both directions; counts of 3, 5 and 7 are inauspicious.
Yoni (4) compares the animal assigned to each birth nakshatra. Graha Maitri (5) compares the friendship between the lords of the two moon rashis. Gana (6) compares temperament as Deva, Manushya or Rakshasa.
Bhakoot (7) measures the distance between the two moon rashis; the 2/12, 5/9 and 6/8 pairs score zero. Nadi (8) compares the constitutional type — Adi, Madhya or Antya — assigned to each birth nakshatra; sharing one scores zero.
What a score out of 36 means
Eighteen is the conventional threshold. But a 26 with Nadi dosha is treated more cautiously than a 20 without it, because the two heaviest kootas are the ones the tradition treats as disqualifying rather than merely costly.
Read the breakdown, not the total. This calculator prints the raw values behind every koota — which varna, which yoni, which nadi, which rashi distance — so you can see exactly where the points went rather than taking a number on trust.
Ashtakoota is one method among several. In parts of South India, Dashakoota with ten factors is used instead. Treat any single number as one input to a decision, not the decision.
What is Nadi Dosha?
Nadi dosha occurs when both birth nakshatras fall in the same nadi — Adi, Madhya or Antya. It costs all eight points, the largest single weight in the scheme. The three nadis correspond loosely to Vata, Pitta and Kapha in Ayurveda, and the traditional concern is constitutional rather than temperamental.
Several exceptions are recognised: the same nakshatra with different padas, the same nakshatra with different moon rashis, or the same rashi lord. How strictly the dosha is applied varies a great deal by region and family.
What is Bhakoot Dosha?
Bhakoot dosha occurs when the two moon rashis stand at 2/12, 5/9 or 6/8 from each other. Any of these scores zero out of seven. The 6/8 pairing, sometimes called Shadashtak, is usually treated as the most serious of the three.
It is commonly treated as cancelled when the lords of the two rashis are friends or the same graha — Mesha and Vrishchika, for instance, both ruled by Mangal.
What is Mangal (Kuja) Dosha?
A chart is called Manglik when Mars occupies the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house. Gun Milan does not cover it, so it is checked separately — the Manglik calculator on this site counts from the lagna, the Moon and Venus, and reports all three.
The most commonly cited cancellation is both people being Manglik. Mars in its own rashi, or aspected by Jupiter, is also widely treated as cancelling it.
How this calculator works
Both charts are computed in your browser from the birth details you enter. The Moon's sidereal longitude gives each person's rashi and nakshatra, and the eight kootas are scored from those.
Varna, Tara, Gana, Bhakoot, Nadi and Graha Maitri follow the classical rules exactly. Vashya and Yoni use a reduced matrix — identical group scores full marks, a traditional mortal-enemy pair scores zero, everything else scores the neutral value — because the full published matrices differ between authorities. The methodology page states this plainly.
