How Mangal Dosha is determined
Mars is located in the chart, then its house is counted. Counting from the lagna is standard; many practitioners also count from the Moon, and a smaller number from Venus, the karaka of marriage. This calculator reports all three, because a chart that is Manglik from one reference and not the others is generally treated as mild.
What you need
Date, time and place of birth. Mars moves slowly, so a few minutes of error will not change its rashi — but the lagna advances through the whole zodiac daily, so the house count from the lagna does depend on an accurate time.
What the result means
The calculator prints which house Mars falls in from each of the three reference points, so the verdict is checkable rather than asserted. Several cancellations are widely accepted: Mars in its own rashi (Mesha or Vrishchika) or exalted in Makara, Mars aspected by or conjunct Jupiter, and — most commonly cited — both people being Manglik.
