Raksha Bandhan celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters. Sisters tie a protective thread (rakhi) on their brothers' wrists, and brothers pledge to look after them.
Sisters apply tilak, perform aarti, tie the rakhi and offer sweets, and brothers give gifts or money in return. Rakhis are also tied between cousins and close friends, and in many places the day coincides with Shravani, when Brahmins renew the sacred thread.
