How it is observed
Holika Dahan is the bonfire lit on the eve of Holi, recalling the legend in which the devotee Prahlad survived the fire while his aunt Holika was consumed. It symbolises the victory of good over evil.
Communities build a pyre of wood and cow-dung cakes, worship it and circle the fire while offering coconut, grain and new crops such as green wheat or gram. Many people take a little ash from the fire home or apply it to the forehead.
