How it is observed

Ghatasthapana is the first day of Navratri and of Dashain, when a sacred pot (kalash) is installed to invoke the goddess Durga. It opens the nine nights of goddess worship.

In Nepal, families sow barley and maize seeds in sand or soil in a dark room (the dashain ghar) to grow jamara, which is given with tika on Vijaya Dashami. In India, households set up a kalash with water, mango leaves and a coconut, often sow barley, and many begin a Navratri fast.
