How it is observed

Haritalika Teej is observed mainly by women in honour of the goddess Parvati, recalling her penance to win Shiva as her husband. Married women pray for their husbands' wellbeing and unmarried women for a good partner.

In Nepal, women gather for dar, a festive meal, on the eve, then fast, often without water, dress in red and sing and dance at Shiva temples such as Pashupatinath. In India, especially Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, women keep a nirjala fast, worship clay images of Shiva and Parvati and keep a night vigil.
