How it is observed
Rishi Panchami is the last day of the Teej festival in Nepal, when women honour the seven sages (Saptarishi). Traditionally it is regarded as a rite of purification linked to customs around menstruation.
Women bathe in rivers or at home, traditionally cleaning their teeth and body with 365 stems of the datiwan (apamarga) plant, and worship the Saptarishi. Many eat only food grown without ploughing, and large gatherings take place at riverside sites such as Teku Dovan in Kathmandu.
