How it is observed
Dhanteras is the first day of the five-day Diwali festival. It is dedicated to Dhanvantari, regarded in Hindu tradition as the physician of the gods, and to Lakshmi and Kubera.
Many families buy gold, silver or new metal utensils, a purchase traditionally considered auspicious on this day. Homes are cleaned and lit, and in the evening a lamp is placed facing south for Yama (Yama Deepam).
