How it is observed

Mha Puja is a Newar ritual of worshipping one's own body and self, held on the fourth day of Tihar, which is also the Nepal Sambat new year. It is observed mainly by Newar communities in the Kathmandu Valley and elsewhere in Nepal.

Family members sit in a row, each before a mandala drawn with oil, rice and colours, and the eldest woman of the house offers each person sagun of egg, fish, meat, bara and aila with a garland and thread. Processions and cultural events mark the Nepal Sambat new year.
