How it is observed

Kaag Tihar is the first day of Tihar in Nepal, when crows are honoured. In Hindu tradition the crow is regarded as a messenger of Yama, the god of death.

In the morning, families set out rice, sweets and other food for crows on rooftops or leaf plates before eating themselves. The day coincides with Dhantrayodashi, and homes begin lighting lamps for Tihar.
