Capricorn Rashi

In short

3/ 5 · Overall

The Moon sits in your fourth house, which unsettles the ground under you. Home and comfort need attention before ambition does. Rest is not a waste of this day.

The Moon sits in a nakshatra of Ketu, which thins the noise and sharpens instinct. You will see through something you had been taking at face value.

About Capricorn

Makara climbs. A movable earth rashi ruled by Shani, it is built for the long, unglamorous middle of a project, and it gets there. Makara people take responsibility young, often earlier than was fair, and carry it without much complaint. They are underestimated early and rarely late. The cost is a difficulty in stopping, and a suspicion of ease. What Makara has to learn is that rest is not the same as failure.

Makara — known in English as Capricorn — is the sidereal zodiac sign of the Sea-Goat, ruled by Shani (Saturn). It is a earth (prithvi) rashi of movable (chara) quality: in Vedic astrology that pair describes how a sign begins things, holds them, or adapts to them.

In the sidereal zodiac the Sun passes through Makara from roughly 14 January to 12 February. Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, where Capricorn runs from 22 December – 19 January. The two differ by about 24 degrees — the ayanamsa — which is why your Vedic rashi is usually the sign before your Western one.

Makara contains Uttara Ashadha (Pada 2–4), Shravana, Dhanishta (Pada 1–2). Each rashi spans 30 degrees and holds two and a quarter nakshatras, so the nakshatra locates a planet far more precisely than the rashi alone, and it is the nakshatra that determines your Vimshottari dasha sequence.

In Indian and Nepali practice your rashi is your Chandra rashi — the sign the Moon occupied at your birth, not the Sun. The Moon governs the mind, and it is the Moon's daily transit counted from your rashi that a daily rashifal actually reads.

In traditional matching, Capricorn tends to find easy ground with Taurus, Virgo, where the element and the ruling planets agree. Cancer asks more work — not incompatibility, but a difference in pace and priority that has to be named rather than assumed. Ashtakoota Gun Milan looks at eight factors and not only the rashi, so treat sign-to-sign compatibility as a first indication rather than a verdict.

Frequently asked questions

What are the dates for Makara rashi?

The Sun transits Makara from about 14 January to 12 February each year in the sidereal zodiac. In the Western tropical zodiac, Capricorn covers 22 December – 19 January. The roughly three-week gap between the two is the ayanamsa — the precession accumulated between the fixed-star zodiac and the equinox-based one.

Which planet rules Makara?

Makara is ruled by Shani (Saturn). When a Makara chart is read, the condition of that planet — its sign, house, aspects and dasha — carries much of the weight.

Which nakshatras fall in Makara?

Uttara Ashadha (Pada 2–4), Shravana, Dhanishta (Pada 1–2). A rashi spans 30 degrees and contains two and a quarter nakshatras, so the nakshatra fixes a planet's position far more precisely than the rashi, and it sets the Vimshottari dasha sequence.

Why is my Vedic rashi different from my Western star sign?

Because the two zodiacs start from different points. The tropical zodiac begins at the spring equinox; the sidereal zodiac used in Vedic astrology is fixed to the stars. They have drifted about 24 degrees apart, so people born in the first three weeks of a Western sign usually fall in the previous rashi.

Is rashifal based on the Sun sign or the Moon sign?

The Moon sign. In Indian and Nepali usage your rashi is the sign the Moon occupied at your birth. A daily rashifal reads the transiting Moon counted from that sign, which is why the prediction changes every day or two as the Moon moves.
