Makara climbs. A movable earth rashi ruled by Shani, it is built for the long, unglamorous middle of a project, and it gets there. Makara people take responsibility young, often earlier than was fair, and carry it without much complaint. They are underestimated early and rarely late. The cost is a difficulty in stopping, and a suspicion of ease. What Makara has to learn is that rest is not the same as failure.
Makara — known in English as Capricorn — is the sidereal zodiac sign of the Sea-Goat, ruled by Shani (Saturn). It is a earth (prithvi) rashi of movable (chara) quality: in Vedic astrology that pair describes how a sign begins things, holds them, or adapts to them.
In the sidereal zodiac the Sun passes through Makara from roughly 14 January to 12 February. Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, where Capricorn runs from 22 December – 19 January. Because the two zodiacs start from different points. The tropical zodiac begins at the spring equinox; the sidereal zodiac used in Vedic astrology is fixed to the stars. They have drifted about 24 degrees apart, so people born in the first three weeks of a Western sign usually fall in the previous rashi.
