How it is observed

Bhai Tika is the fifth and final day of Tihar in Nepal, when sisters worship their brothers and pray for their long life. It is linked to the story of Yama and his sister Yamuna.

Sisters circle their brothers with a line of oil, apply a seven-coloured tika, place a makhamali (globe amaranth) garland and offer walnuts, dried fruit and sel roti; brothers give tika and gifts in return. Newar communities observe the day as Kija Puja.
