How it is observed
Kukur Tihar is the second day of Tihar in Nepal, when dogs are honoured. Dogs are associated with Yama and with Bhairav, and are valued as companions and guardians.
Pet and street dogs receive a red tika, a marigold garland and food such as meat, eggs or sel roti. Nepal Police and some animal welfare groups hold ceremonies for their dogs.
