How it is observed

Diwali, or Deepavali, is the festival of lamps. Hindus associate it with Rama's return to Ayodhya and the worship of Lakshmi, while Jains mark the nirvana of Mahavira and Sikhs observe Bandi Chhor Divas.

Homes are cleaned and decorated with oil lamps, lights and rangoli, and families perform Lakshmi–Ganesh puja in the evening. People exchange sweets and gifts, wear new clothes and set off fireworks; in Bengal the night is observed as Kali Puja.
