How it is observed

Chhath is dedicated to the Sun god, Surya, and Chhathi Maiya, and is observed mainly in Bihar, Jharkhand and eastern Uttar Pradesh in India and in Nepal's Madhesh. Devotees give thanks and pray for the wellbeing of their families.

Over four days, devotees (vratis) begin with a ritual bath and simple meal (nahay khay) and kharna, then keep a strict fast without water. They stand in rivers or ponds to offer arghya to the setting and then the rising sun, with thekua, sugarcane and fruit in bamboo baskets.
