How it is observed
Karva Chauth is a fast kept by married women, mainly in north and west India, for the long life and wellbeing of their husbands. It is named after the karva, the earthen pot used in the ritual.
Women eat sargi, a pre-dawn meal often prepared by the mother-in-law, then fast without food or water through the day. In the evening they gather for the puja and katha, then view the moon, often through a sieve, and break the fast with water from their husband's hand.
